About Kosmos

Since the late nineties, Kosmos Designs and Ideas (formally known as Kosmos Designs) has been bringing beautiful furniture and accessories to the United States from South East Asia, North Africa, Latin America and Europe. We are known for our incredible collection of furniture crafted from recycled teak. Kosmos DI has sought out skilled craftsmen to create our original designs and to showcase their unique pieces. This combination has become a collection that is constantly evolving and reinventing itself.

Every piece of Kosmos furniture is handmade and built to last for generations.

Our artisans recycle teak from buildings, docks, railroads, and boats and transform it into pieces of beauty. An archway may become the legs of a table; a door can be made into a table top; a boat rudder can be made into a bookshelf or table stand and a window can be made into a conversation starter that adorns your wall. Our goal is to remain true to the natural and antique beauty of the wood.

For those who prefer cleaner lines and a more contemporary style, some of our pieces are carved from solid plantation teak. Rest assured that this wood is harvested from sustainable teak farms that are thoughtfully reforested – not deforested.

Kosmos Designs and Ideas is always seeking new pieces and styles. If you have a special request, please let us know. Kosmos DI may be able to help you make your dream furniture a reality. The nature of recycle wood, the variety of wood finishes and textures ensure that each piece is unique and no two items are identical. In fact, many of our pieces, although similar in their design, are one of kind.

History Of Teak

Teak, also known as Tectona Grandis, is a deciduous tree that grows tall and straight with buttressing stems and a large crown. Teak is native to South East Asia and its natural distribution goes from the Indian subcontinent through Myanmar and Thailand to Laos. It’s not clearly established if the “natural” stands in Indonesia are indigenous or the result of early cultivation by Hindu settlers, possibly in the 7th century. It is believed that teak was introduced to Java from India 400/600 years ago.

Teak is grown today throughout Central America, parts of South America and Asia. Teak is not grown in the rainforest contrary to popular believe, teak grows in hilly dry terrain. The wood is oily to the touch and when freshly cut has a smell reminiscent of leather. It has natural oils that protect it and keep it moist. Teak oil also creates a resistance to splitting and cracking and wards off termites and other insects.

Teak has great character and can be used repeatedly. In fact, the most cherished teak is recycled teak that comes from old buildings, boats and railroads as this teak typically grew a minimum of 80 to 100 years – and beyond. Huge planks and enormous beams that have been salvaged from these demolished or old wood constructions are coveted today. Teak can last for centuries; in fact 1,000 year old beams have been found in India. The durable and versatile nature of teakwood make it well sought throughout the world.
